Scomi Launches Next Generation Monorail-SUTRA

Bigger capacity secures SUTRA's position as an effective mass urban transport system

Urban commuters across Asia, Middle East and Africa can now look forward to a more comfortable ride to ease their current traffic woes in their cities with the launch of Scomi's next generation monorail SUTRA today. Developed by Energy and Logistics provier, Scomi Group Bhd ("Scomi"), SUTRA is the latest monorail offering for the world. SUTRA which stands for Scomi Urban Transit Rail Application has improved features to provide better capacity, ergonomics and safety.

As an urban transportation system, SUTRA is effective in terms of cost and alleviating urban congestion in today's fast growing cities that are faced with urban congestion. The prospect of implementing a mass urban transport system that is friendly to their budgets and can be completed faster has got the urban planners from all over the world excited.

Scomi via its subsidiary, Scomi Rail Bhd ("Scomi Rail") is one of only two integrated monorail system providers in the world which offer design, fabrication and integration of monorail rolling stock and related electro-mechanical system.

Building upon the experience of developing the existing monorail currently operating in the city centre of Kuala Lumpur, towards the end of 2006, Scomi embarked on a journey to develop its next generation monorail. Within twelve months after commencing engineering design, Scomi produced a new monorail system that sets the standard for the industry. The epitome of design and engineering, this monorail is called SUTRA and was officially launched by Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Dato' Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak.

"Our monorail technology provides Scomi with a new product to cater for pent up urban transportation demand, thus increasing the prospect of our product. Its technological specifications highlight the capabilities of our team of design and engineering experts. This is reflected in our monorail, which was designed in compliance with over 50 international standards covering areas such as safety, quality assurance, vehicle certification, as well as reliability, availability and maintainability,"said Group CEO of Scomi, Mr Shah Hakim Zain.

This next generation monorail has enhanced features such as composite body and interior panel, new bogie system and structure, mass transit components drive train, improved propulsion and control system, and regenerative and pneumatic brake system. Its improved direct-drive propulsion system and lower vehicle weight have enabled Scomi to produce an energy-efficient monorail system.

Today, there is a growing interest in the monorail as an urban transit solution especially in cities where transit corridors are limited in space and dense in nature. As an urban transportation system, monorails are acknowledged as a more effective and viable solution compared with other conventional rail systems. Furthermore, monorail is an environmentally-friendly urban transport solution that is a welcome addition to any city since it will alleviate traffic congestion, faced by cities as a result of rapid urbanisation.

As a solution for urban congestion, the monorail has obvious benefits. Its smaller "footprint" means less construction material, land and time to construct, which translates to lower cost of construction as well as operations and maintenance. At the same time, construction can be carried out with minimum interruption to the city's road traffic.

To leverage on the monorail's growing popularity as an urban transport solutions.
